Marcello Malpighi (1628-1694)
An Italian doctor who, after an extensive academic career, at the age of 38 decided to dedicate his free time to anatomical studies. His most illustrative efforts and discoveries were based on the use of the microscope, thus, many microscopic anatomical structures are named after Malpighi, such as the Malpighian tubule system.
