Greek physician, pharmacologist, and botanist – Dioscorides was the author of a 5-volume encyclopedia, “De Materia Medica” (“Regarding Medical Materials”) about herbal medicine and related medicinal substances – a precursor to all modern pharmacopeias. This was widely circulated in Lain, Greek, and Arabic. This work is the premiere historical source of information about the medicines used by the Greeks, Romans and other cultures of antiquity. Its publication was often supplemented with commentary from Arabic and Indian sources.He was a surgeon with the army of emperor Nero.
