Jean-Nicolas Corvisart (1755-1821)
An important figure in the history of French medicine, Corvisart was Napoleon Bonaparte’s primary physician until the dictator’s exile to St. Helena. He translated from Latin to French Leopold von Auenbrugg’s “Inventum Novum.” Corvisart was fond of Auenbrugg’s use of chest percussion as a diagnostic tool and began to perfect the technique. He taught at the Collège de France where he gained reputation as an expert in cardiology.
