In 2008-2009, hand surgeon Dr. Robert Schenck and his wife, photographer Marcia Whitney-Schenck, volunteered for nine months in Cameroon, he Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Uganda. While Dr. Schenck was teaching hand surgery to national physicians, Marcia taught English as a second language to elementary school children and healthcare professionals.
Dr. Schenck said, “I had wanted to go back to Africa where I had done my first reconstructive hand surgery cases. After a busy and successful academic/private practice at Rush University in Chicago, I had both the time and means to return to Africa."
Marcia collected prayers and photographed people at worship. The following photographs are from her recently published book, What God Gives, which may be purchased at http://www.amazon.com or http://www.lulu.com.
Their current activities can be best explored by going to their websites at http://www.handsurgeryworld.net and http://www.notjustgrammar.com.
